Pointing to a new study of proposed ERCOT market reforms, major business groups including the Texas Association of Manufacturers and TXOGA on Monday supported the assessment that the Public Utility Commission ’s recommendations for redesigning the state’s electricity market “would entail billions in costs for customers without a meaningful improvement in reliability.”
“ERCOT market design reform will be among the most consequential decisions the Legislature will make and we wanted an expert review of the leading options on the table to ensure that any redesign will be consumer-focused, actually enhance reliability and maintain competitive cost structures,” said Tony Bennett , president and CEO of TAM. “Future job growth, company location and investment decisions depend upon the Legislature charting the right course, so this evaluation of options is essential.” The business groups said that Dispatchable Reliability Reserve Service, the path forward preferred by Texas Senate leadership under Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick , would be “much more effective at a fraction of the cost.” Of course, Gov. Abbott supports the reforms promoted by his appointees on the PUC.
The assessment prepared by Bates White Economic Consulting commissioned by TAM and TXOGA along with the Texas Chemical Council and Texas Industrial Energy Consumers can be downloaded right here .
