The high-ranking Texas Education Agency official caught on a recorded phone call promoting school vouchers as a way to “stick it to” a local school district is set to meet on Wednesday with members of the Texas House Democratic Caucus .
That’s according to an email sent by Chairman Trey Martinez Fischer on Monday.
A recording of Deputy TEA Commissioner Steve Lecholop surfaced earlier this month in which he was trying to convince the mother of a special needs student to share her story with Gov. Greg Abbott ’s speechwriters. That recording is here .
In it, Lecholop tells the mother that sharing her story would help Abbott make the case for school vouchers. When the mother expressed concerns that diverting money from public education would harm other students by draining financial resources from school districts, Lecholop said her concerns were “correct.”
But he argued school districts would simply have to do more with less.
“School districts, what they have to do if they lose a student, [is] be smart about how they allocate their resources and maybe that’s one less fourth grade teacher,” Lecholop said. Appealing to the mother’s frustrations as she struggles every day to get the right resources for her special needs child, Lecholop said "In my mind, what a good way for you to stick it to Joshua ISD.”
"There is no more powerful mouth in the state of Texas than the governor,” he said. "Oh, goodness can you imagine?" While Lecholop sounded delighted at the idea of sticking it to school districts, Chairman Martinez Fischer took offense.
“He was caught on audio advocating for private school vouchers on behalf of Gov. Abbott, admitting that funding to public schools would decrease if such a policy passed,” Martinez Fischer wrote to House Democrats. “I deemed these remarks to be of great interest to our caucus and invited the Deputy Commissioner to attend our upcoming HDC meeting in order to address his remarks as well as answer questions we may have.” Developing….
